A quick look at the history of Winthrop Beach
Winthrop Beach has always been considered an important destination in Massachusetts. Between the mid 1600s and late 1800s, the beach was used almost entirely for utilitarian purposes, including clam digging, and lobster fishing. Even the kelp from the rocks was harvested and used as fertilizer. Today, New England rental car travelers can still see some fishing boats along the horizon, but the beach itself has given itself over to recreational pursuits. The best location in town

The official starting point of the beach is located just off of Crest Avenue in an area commonly referred to as the "Green Bars." Highlights of the beach include five wave breakers known as the "Five Sisters." These break walls were installed off shore in order to protect nearby neighborhoods from the large swells that are stirred up during storms.

Directions to Winthrop
New England rental car travelers will find the community of Winthrop just minutes away from downtown Boston. From the Summer Tunnel, exit onto Route 1A and then onto Route 145. The Ted Williams Tunnel is also a great option for New England rental car travelers as it cuts the commute to just 15 minutes. New England rental car travelers can also access this quaint community by private boat. There are plans in the works to create a commuter ferry service to and from downtown Boston as well.
