Weymouth Car Rentals and Weymouth Overview

Visit the charming city of Weymouth with the Weymouth car rentals company VERC Rentals. Located in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, United States, Weymouth has a total population of 53 988 (as of the 2000 census). Weymouth once heavily relied on the shoemaking industry starting in the 1700s right up to 1973, when the Stetson Shoe Company closed its doors. Weymouth also once had a portion of its land use by the former Naval Air Station South Weymouth but was closed in 1996 under the Base Realignment and Closer Art.

The residents of Weymouth have designated 4 unofficial parts of the town. Each district is very distinct from the other and includes South Weymouth which consists mainly south of route 3. East Weymouth is basically the center of Weymouth and includes Whitman's pond, Jackson Square and the Town Hall. The other two districts are the Landing and North Weymouth which actually overlap each other. North Weymouth is considered to be everything above the East Weymouth and the Landing. The North Weymouth area includes the Great Esker Park and Wessagussett Beach. Go on an adventure and see the different districts with your Weymouth car rentals company VERC Rentals.

It's all in the name

The city of Weymouth saw its first European settlers in 1622 from an offshoot Plymouth settlement called Wessagusset. According to city lore, in 1624, settlement of the city was greatly increased with the incoming of the ship Charity from Weymouth, England. It is said that on board that ship was Richard Harding, the ancestor of President Warren Harding. In 1630, with 500 inhabitants Weymouth officially became a part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and was officially incorporated in 1635 assuming its present name.

The city that almost didn't make it....

When you travel to the city of Weymouth with your Weymouth car rentals company VERC Rentals you should realize that the city would be very different then what is today if it hadn't been for one man. Myles Standish is credited with saving the settlement from Indian attacks. In doing so, Standish hoped that it would preempt an attack on Plymouth. The city of Weymouth faced another crisis in 1914, when the original town hall was destroyed by fire. In 1928, the town hall was replaced with a replica of the old Massachusetts State House in Boston. See the new town hall with your Weymouth car rentals company VERC Rentals today!
