The state of Massachusetts may be best known for its role in our nation's history, but did you know that this eastern state is also and important wildlife and environmental center? Dozens of regional, federal and national parks are located throughout the state, providing Massachusetts car rental customers with access to an exciting world of water, wildlife and wonder. One of the best natural oases in Massachusetts is that of the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, located along the south shore of Cape Cod. This untouched world of barrier beaches and marshlands is a great place to visit, especially if you and your Massachusetts car rental friends are interested in local biodiversity and ecosystems.
Massachusetts is a treasure trove of national jewels
Waquoit Bay is proud to be a part of the National Estuarine Research Reserve system, providing our nation's scientists with an endless supply of useful information. The National Estuarine Research Reserve System currently includes 25 sites throughout the US and Puerto Rico, each of which represents a different coastal region. The Waquoit Bay National Estuarine represents the Northern Virginia biogeographic region and in includes the area from Chesapeake Bay to Cape Cod. The reserve encompasses more than 2,700 acres of open water, beaches, uplands and marshlands. The towns of Falmouth and Mashpee are also located on the outskirts of the reserve.
Outdoor fun awaits everyone at Waquoit Bay
The Waquoit Bay National Estuarine is roughly broken down into 9 different areas. These areas boast their own unique history as well as their own distinct collection of recreational activities. Massachusetts car rental customers are encouraged to visit areas that appeal to their one personal style of outdoor recreation. - Washburn Island: Stretching for more than 330 acres, this Island includes barrier beach, oak and pine forest as well as vibrant coastal salt ponds. Massachusetts car rental customers will find limited camping available in this area, thanks to 11 wilderness campsites. Please note that a boat is necessary to reach this island.
- South Cape Beach State Park, Sage Lot and Flat Ponds: This section of the estuarine covers more than 432 acres and includes the South Cape Beach State Park. Massachusetts car rental customers will find plenty of swimming within the park, as well as ample fishing opportunities. The beaches in this section of the park serve as nesting grounds for the federally threatened Piping Plover, as well as a foraging ground for the endangered Roseate Tern.
- Waquoit Bay: Massachusetts car rental travelers will find plenty of fun water activities in this area of the park. Popular programs include kayaking, sailing, power boating, fishing and birding. The waters are relatively shallow in this area as well (maximum depth is approximately 9 feet).
- Hamblin Pond, Jehu Pond and Abigail's Brook: The best way to explore these unique areas is by kayak. Abigail's Brook also offers wonderful hiking opportunities as well as fantastic sightings of Osprey nests.
- Bog, Bourne and Caleb Ponds: These small freshwater ponds boast some of the finest fishing in the area. The water was originally the primary source of drinking water for Native Americans and European settlers in the area.
- Quashnet River Property: Stretching for more than 360 acres, the Quashnet River is the largest source of freshwater to the Bay. It is also an important habitat for Brook Trout, Herring and Eels. A 3 mile loop trail circumnavigates Quashnet River, providing visitors with a great hiking, walking or jogging trail.
- North Quashnet Woods: Hiking and fishing are popular activities in this area. The trails here are slightly less popular then the ones around Quashnet River, but don't let that dissuade you from using them.
- Child's River: Named for its size, the Child's River is the smallest sub-estuary of the Waquoit Bay watershed. It is best known as a source for archeological artifacts, including numbers points dating back more than 450-1000 years ago. Kayaking, fishing and power boating are popular activities along the river.
- Headquarters Site: Massachusetts car rental visitors are encouraged to begin their estuarine exploration in this section of the park, which includes the Visitor's Center. The Center is open year round, Monday through Friday from 10am to 4pm. A short nature trail surrounds the Visitor's Center and provides the backdrop for numerous seasonal education programs.
