Wang Center for the Performing Arts
The Wang Center for the Performing Arts, now named the Citi Performing Arts Center, can be found in Boston with your Boston car rental. There are two theaters that make up this center, the Wang Theater and the Shubert Theater. Both can be found on Tremont Street in the Theater District of the city. The Center has partnerships with the Boston Lyric Opera, Boston Ballet, and Commonwealth Shakespeare Company.
The Wang Theater
The Wang Theater opened in 1925 as the Metropolitan Theater. It was developed by Max Shoolman and designed by architect Clarence Blackall with the assistance of C. Howard Crane. Seating more than 3600 people, it has seen many performances in its time. When you visit with your Boston rental car, it has been home to the Boston Ballet, Stuttgart Opera, Metropolitan Opera, Bolshoi Ballet, and Kirov Ballet, among other touring performances. Over time, however, they were not able to attract the large touring companies because of the size of the stage and the outdated production facilities. In the 1980s, it became a non-profit center and was able to bring back theatrical performances.
The Shubert Theater
Next door with your car rental Boston you will find the Shubert Theater. This is known as Bostons little princess. Opening in 1910 with a production of The Taming of the Shrew, this theater seats 1600 people. In 1996, the theater signed an agreement with the Wang Center to be part of the Shubert Organization. Soon after, it was home to the first national tour of the musical Rent.
