The South Shore Natural Science Center is dedicated to bringing environmental awareness and education of the South Shore to the public. This nonprofit organization is situated on 30 acres of land and surrounded by 200 acres of conserved and recreational land.

Stepping into the zone

The EcoZone is a multidimensional and interactive exhibit area that allows visitors to visit the wetlands, woondlands, and meadows of southeastern Massachusetts all in one place. The exhibit was officially opened on January 8, 2002 by Jeff Corwin of Animal Planet. Amongst the life-sized model of a red maple tree and ponds, the EcoZone is home to a large of collection of turtles and frogs. Crawling through a hollow log allows visitors to get an up close view of the turtle and frog ponds which is surrounded by grasses, ferns, and swamp azalea.

The exhibits

In addition to the EcoZone, the South Shore Natural Science Center also has a Greenhouse were rent a car in Plymouth travelers can see an array of local and exotic plants all year round. Another popular stop is the owl exhibit which houses an owl named Hedwig. This Barred Owl, is native to the region and is used in educational programs to emphasize conservation and protection measures need in order to preserve the local animal species.

The South Shore Natural Science Center is also the temporary home of four hatchling Northern Red-Bellied Cooters. These endangered turtles where found in the coastal plain ponds in the Plymouth County area and taken by staff from the Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program to be protected. The cooters will be released back in the wild once they are larger and better able to protect themselves.

A perfect view

For a limited time only you can view the 5th Annual Juried Art Show, “Beyond the Garden Gate” with your rent a car in Plymouth. There are over 46 paintings, photographs and mixed medias on display and available for sale. A portion of the sales go to the South Shore Natural Science Center environmental education programs.

Educating future generations

The South Shore Natural Science Center is driven to preserve the environment and to encourage responsibility to natural resources by encouraging active inquiry and developing environmental literacy. Through offering environmental education programs, the Science Center promotes the protection of the natural resources and the quality of life on the South Shore. Nature programs led by an experienced naturalists are held throughout the year. On the trails, children will be able to explore the diverse wildlife habitats and see wildlife up close.

Exciting events

Watch the Perseid Showers during the Beneath the Starry Sky program or view some award winning watercolours at the juried art show.
