Its all in the design
The Shubert Theater was designed by architect Henry Beaumont Herts. The theater was named after Sam S. Shubert, the second oldest of three brothers of a famous theatrical producing family. It has a Venetian Renaissance facade with the adjoining Booth Theatre, which was constructed at the same time, although the two have distinctly different interiors. The two theatres are connected by a private road and sidewalk known by locals as "Shubert Alley". At the top floor of the building houses the offices of the Shubert Organization. Playing since 1913
The Shubert Theater was officially opened on October 21 1913 with a series of Shakespearean plays, including Othello, Hamlet, and The Merchant of Venice, staged by the Forbes-Robertson Repertory Company. The Shubert Theatre in 2006. The theatre's longest tenant was A Chorus Line, which ran for 6,137 performances from July 25 1975 to April 28 1990 and set the record for longest running show in Broadway history! The screen adaptation of the Broadway musical The Producers features the Shubert Theater as the venue where Funny Boy, Springtime for Hitler, and Prisoners of Love are performed
A little history
The Shubert Theater was originally conceived as The Lyric Theatre by developer Charles H. Bond, it was taken over by the Shubert Organization in 1908 after Bond's death. In February 1996 the Wang Center signed a 40-year lease agreement with the Shubert Organization. In November 1996, the theatre reopened after being renovated with the first national tour of the musical Rent.
