What is the Main Streets program?
The Main Streets program began in the Roslindale neighbourhood or Boston back in 1983. At this time, the neighbourhood was suffering from disinvestment and a complete deterioration of the downtown commercial core. In order to turn things around, Boston city Councillor Thomas M. Menino utilized the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Main Street Modal in order to create an organization that would bring merchants, residents and city officials back together. In just three years the neighbourhood was already seeing dramatic results - 73 facade changes, 43 commercial building renovations, 29 business gains and 132 net new jobs. In 1995 Menino was elected Mayor and the Main Streets Campaign had become an integral part of Boston's downtown revitalization.
