When the Adams took it over in 1787 it had been abandoned during the Revolutionary War. It was quite small, but Abigail extended it and made it much more livable over time. The house was given to the United States in 1946 and is now open to the public as part of the Adams National Historic Park, which also includes John Adams and John Quincy Adams birthplaces and the United First Parish Church where the presidents and their wives are buried.
