Explore Plymouth

The 1749 Court House is a museum in the center of Plymouth that you can visit with your Massachusetts car rental. The best part of this museum is that it is free and it is filled with interesting items from the history of the town. It is home to some of the oldest historical monuments in the country. The Plymouth Court House is the oldest wooden court house and the longest used municipal building in the country. Originally, it was supposed to only be used for the town, but eventually it was also used when the circuit court was in session. When a new court house was built in 1820, the town bought the 1749 one for offices for every town department.

Pilgrim Memorial State Park is another unique historical site that you can visit with your Massachusetts car rental. It offers a unique interpretive program for you to learn about the history and significance of Plymouth in shaping America. You will also want to stop at Forefathers' Monument with your Massachusetts car rental. This is home to an impressive monument that memorializes the interpretation that Victorians would have had of their world and the forces that motivated them to move half way around the world. It is located at the landing site of the Mayflower and the original settlement of the Pilgrims and only the second permanent settlement in British North America.

All aboard!

When visiting the museum with your Massachusetts car rental, you will learn about the history of the ship and its people. The ship left Plymouth on September 6, 1620. The trip was a long and hard one. There was disease onboard and a sever winter storm sent the ship off course, which was originally destined for the Hudson River and the settlement of Jamestown. On March 21, 1621, surviving passengers went onshore, and on April 5, the vessel returned to England.

Since the settlers were not able to reach their intended destination, they did not have permission to establish a colony where they actually ended up. In order to establish a new order, they signed the Mayflower Compact at the tip of Cape Cod. Over the winter, there was a serious outbreak of disease on the ship, and only 53 of the original 102 passengers on board survived.
