The house was built in 1804 for Jonathan Mason, a successful businessman, real estate developer, and senator in Boston. The design is attributed to Charles Bulfinch, a prominent Boston architect, and is a good example of the Federal Period brick townhouse that were common of the time. In 1885 Dr. Arthur Nichols bought it for his wife and daughters. The eldest was Rose Standish Nichols, who was a noted landscape architect, writer, and suffragist. She owned and cared for the house from 1935 until her death in 1960. Since 1961, the Nichols House Museum has been open to the public to show what domestic life looked like at the turn of the century. The furnishings were accumulated over several generations and includes European and American wooden furniture from the 17th-19th centuries.
