A unique Hull icon waits at Nantasket Beach Reservation
Massachusetts car rental customers will find more than just a beautiful beach waiting for them along the waterside at Nantasket Beach. This is because Nantasket Beach is also home to the Paragon Carousel. Back in the 1800s, Nantasket was revered as one of the premier resorts in New England prompting the creation of numerous amusements. One such attraction was Paragon Park – its key ride? A merry-go-round designed by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company, installed in 1928. This carousel was soon toted as the finest one ever built by PTC, as it featured two rare Roman Chariots and a scalloped canopy. Like most other amusements, the resorts of Nantasket soon fell out of vogue as travelers preferred to newer attractions located in Cape Cod and northern New England.
Saving the Paragon Carousel
In the early 1980’s Paragon Park was sold to a condominium developer. Local activists immediately came to the rescue of the prestigious Paragon Carousel, persuading the developer to purchase and preserve the magnificent piece of art. A year later, the developer decided to sell the merry-go-round. Once again, the Paragon Carousel was saved, this time during a dramatic auction. Three investors purchased the carousel, relocating it from its original location inside the long forgotten Paragon Park, to its current home on Nantasket Beach. But that’s not the end of the Paragon plight. In 1995, the Paragon Carousel was once again put on the market, this time with a price tag of $1.1 million. A group of people came together, many of whom had been working to revitalizing Hull’s reputation as a tourist location. Calling themselves The Friends of the Paragon Carousel, Inc., these industrious individuals managed to raise enough money to sign papers concerning the magnificent merry-go-round.
Fundraising efforts still continue for the carousel, as plans to restore and refurbish the ride are now in the works.
