This important cultural institution is dedicated to preserving, conserving and interpreting the important contributions of African Americans in the state of Massachusetts. The museum currently boasts four historic sites in Boston and Nantucket, as well as two Black Heritage Trails, each of which narrate the story of organized black communities beginning back as far as the Colonial Period.
Exhibits that will expand your mind
The Museum of African American History Boston presents a number of new and engaging exhibits each and every year. Current exhibits include a special display commemorating the 200th anniversary of the African Meeting House in Boston, called A Gathering Place for Freedom. The exhibit chronicles the history of the free and self-emancipated black Boston communities of the 19th century. In the exhibit, car hire Boston travelers will find early maps, photographs, paintings and artifiacts, along with architectural sketches of the African Meeting House. Upcoming exhibits will include the new Black Entrepreneurs of the 18th and 19th Centuries. Watch for it to open in the next few months.
Take a walk down the Black History Trail
Car hire Boston travelers are encouraged to park their cars and embark on a walking tour that explores Boston's 19th century African Community. The Black Heritage Trail passes a number of important African American landmarks in the city, including The Philips School, the Smith Court Residences and the African Meeting House. Unfortunately, many of the historic homes on the Black Heritage Trail are private residences that are not open to the public. Car hire Boston travelers are only permitted to enter the African Meeting House and the Abiel Smith School. If you're planning to visit the Nantucket region of Massachusetts during your car hire Boston vacation, don't forget to check out the second part of the Black Heritage Trail. The Black History Trail on Nantucket is divided into two segments, Downtown and New Guinea, and includes stops at the Whaling Museum, the Florence Higginbotham House and the Atheneum. Guided walking tours are offered daily Memorial Day through Labor Day. Self-guided walking tour maps are available all year round.
Educational programs offered at the Museum
Car hire Boston travelers will find a plethora of activities inside the Museum of African American History Boston, including numerous educational programs. These programs range from preschool story time to national teacher workshops. Popular programs include Giant Steps in a Small Space: The Abiel Smith School Classroom and the Underground Railroad overnight experience. Directions to the Museum of African American History Boston
Car hire Boston travelers will find the Museum of African American History Boston at 46 Joy Street, Beacon Hill, on the corner of Smith Court. To get there in your vehicle rentals, take Storrow Drive to the Government Center exit onto Cambridge Street. Continue on Cambridge for about a half a mile until you reach Joy Street. Turn right onto Joy Street and you should see the Museum of African American History Boston on your right in Smith Court. Unfortunately, there is no parking available at the museum. However, there are numerous lots and garages in the area. The closest one is the Cambridge Street Garage located underneath the Holiday Inn.
