Seeing the famous residences...

During the Colonial era, Nathanial Ray Thomas, a famous Tory, made his home in Marshfield. He is well known for declaring allegiance to the English crown in the opposition from his Marshfield neighbors. The Commonwealth had British soldiers guard Thomas' estate in order to protect him. However, several Patriots were planning a raid as was only called off when they learned that the British had positioned cannons on the estate. Fifty years passed, in where the attorney, U.S. Senator and Secretary of Stat to three presidents Daniel Webster took over the Thomas estate and took up farming. Webster even gave his last speech on the estate and lived there until his death in 1852.

Making way for the future...

The town of Marshfield has gone through some considerable changes throughout the times. In 1872, a dyke was built over Brant Rock with Green Harbor. But the new dyke didn't come without some resistance. Farmers were eager for the dykes use in draining and working the land while the fisherman argued that the dyke would interrupt the river's tidal flow and silt in the mouth of Green Harbor. The farmers eventually would win and the dyke was built, opening thousands of acres of lowland in which several town residents make their home on today.

An unexpected change...

In 1898, during the fierce Portland Gale, the mouth of the South River at the north end of town was blocked. Ironically, the storm forced the original mouth at Rexhame to close but opened a new mouth a mile north at Fourth Cliff. This resulted in a more stable tidal system making the entire town more accessible whether it be by horse, foot or large automobile.
