Plymouth Car Rental and Jenney Grist Mill
Discover the world of the pioneer during your upcoming Plymouth car rental vacation with a visit the Jenney Grist Mill historic site in Massachusetts. The Jenney Grist Mill is a historic presentation chronicling the life of John Jenney, a pilgrim who journeyed to Plymouth in search of prosperity and privilege. After much hard-work and perseverance, John Jenney built the original grist mill, a machine that ground corn into flour. If you're headed to Plymouth for its rich history, this is one attraction you don't want to miss! Visit the Jenney Grist Mill today and enjoy an educational look at Plymouth's past.
So what exactly is a grist mill?
At a traditional grist mill, like this one in Plymouth, water is diverted from a river into a huge water wheel. This wheel is located along a small channel, known as a sluiceway. As the water wheel spins, large wooden gears inside the mill rotate, grinding two stones in the upper level of the mill. These stones weigh about 2500 pounds each and are about 54 inches wide. When grinding, the runner stone can turn as fast as one revolution per second, grounding up to one ton of corn per day. Plymouth car rental travelers are encouraged to watch this process in action during their visit, but be careful - sometime the wheel spins so fast, the entire building shakes! Once the mill has completed its grinding for the day, Plymouth car rental travelers will be rewarded with organic corn meal. This unique souvenir is available for purchase at the Jenney Grist Mill gift shop.
