Journey into a new world
Visit the only known surviving house in Plymouth where passengers of the Mayflower. Located at 33 Sandwich Street in Plymouth, Massachusetts the Jabez Howland House is owned by the Pilgrim John Howland Society, Inc. and is a National Register of a Historic Place site. Built in 1336 the historic house was sold to John and Elizabeth Howland in 1667 by Jacob Mitchell. The Jabez Howland House was where the Howland’s and their son Jabez and his family resided during the winter time. John Howland almost didn’t make it to the New World, having been swept overboard by the high seas. Luckily, he was able to grab a topsail halyard and although doused many times, he was able to be hauled aboard with the aid of a boat hook.
Under Jabez’s ownership, the roof was raised on the second floor and an addition to the house was made in 1750. The Pilgrim John Howland Society also owns and maintains the other related historic sites such as John and Joseph’s farm on Howland Lane at Rocky Nook in Kingston, Massachusetts.
In remembrance of a pioneer
In 1672, John Howland passed away at 80 years and as the last male Mayflower passenger living in Plymouth. The Howland House remained a private dwelling up until 1912, when through the efforts of the Secretary – Treasurer Nelson V. Titus, was bought by the Pilgrim Howland Society.
Facelift
Beginning in June 1923, major changes to the exterior of the Jabez Howland House were made including a demolition of an old stable due to a fire hazard, the erection of a flagpole, landscaping of additional ground, and construction of a driveway and parking area.
In 1936, during an annual meeting, Brig. Gen. Charles R. Howland was appointed Chairman of the Restoration Committee to being drawing up plans to restore the house to its original period. Sidney T. Strickland, AIA was given the task of drawing up the reconstruction plans.
The end of construction
The renovations were finally completed on August 30, 1941 and the Jabez Howland House was rededicated. Howland member, Col. Francis R. Stoddard and the Gov. Gen. of the General Society of Mayflower descendants gave the address. When you visit the Jabez Howland House with your car rental Plymouth, you will find that the house is decorated with period furniture and artifacts found from archaeological digs at the Rocky Nook home of John and Elizabeth’s farm.

You will also find letters and other documents from famous descendents like Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Winston Churchill.
