Massachusetts Car Rental and Isaac Winslow House
Travel with your Massachusetts car rental to 634 Careswell Street for a day of historical enrichment! Built by Judge Isaac Winslow, the grandson of Mayflower passenger and three-time governor of Plymouth Colony Edward Winslow, the house is a beautiful example of Marshfield`s past. Once considered avant-garde, the mansion has changed little since then. The house was owned by the Winslow family up until 1822 when it was sold to Daniel Webster. The Winslow House has been the property of the Winslow House Association, a non-profit group that promotes and sustains the home. In 1920, the Winslow House was restored and opened to the public.
Pieces of history
The 1699 Winslow House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. When you tour the house with your Massachusetts car rental you will find several antiques and architecture that represent the Winslow period. Some notable items include a chest built in 1700 by Newburyport furniture maker Edmond Titcomb and a 1760 Queen Anne dresser.
More to see at Winslow
The Winslow House property also contains Daniel Webster’s Law Office. Inside the building, Massachusetts car rental travellers can view original articles and letters of former congressman, Senator and Secretary of State who resided in Marshfield. A carriage shed housing a one horse phaeton and Concord Coach can also be found on site. A fully operational Blacksmith Shop is.
Built in 1920, the Tea Room was used to serve turkey dinners in order to raise money for the Winslow House restoration. Today, it is mainly used for social functions, lectures, field trips and dinners.
Famous residents
The Isaac Winslow House has been home to governors, generals, doctors, lawyers and judges who were instrumental in creating Marshfield and the South Shore. General John Winslow, leader of the Massachusetts militia, was also one of these notable occupants. His role evacuating the Acadians from Nova Scotia was immortalized in the epic poem, Evangeline by Longfellow. General John Winslow`s son, Isaac Winslow was also well known for his role as a Loyalist doctor who quarantined and inoculated the residents of Marshfield and Duxbury afflicted with smallpox.
Another famous past resident was manservant Britton Hammon. During his voyages at sea, he was captured by Indians and was able to escape and return to his former master John Winslow. He wrote and published his life story, becoming the first African- American to do so in the New World.
