Travel with your Boston handicap van rentals to the Horseneck Beach State Reservation, a large public state beach reservation on Westport River, Westport Harbor, Horseneck Channel, The Let, Rhode Island Sound, and Buzzards Bay, in the southern portion of the town of Westport, Massachusetts. For the fine sand that goes on and on and on, the dunes, the surf, and the beautiful area of Westport, this beach is a top pick for a day of lazing around at the beach. A day at Horseneck Beach State Reservation is a day well spent with your Boston handicap van rentals!
A day in the sun
Spread across nearly 600 acres of barrier beach and salt marsh, Horseneck Beach State Reservation is one of the most popular facilities in the Massachusetts State Forests and Parks system. Located at the western end of Buzzards Bay, the sandy, southwest facing, 2-mile long beach is breezy all year round, providing excellent wind surfing and a dependable respite from sweltering inland temperatures every summer. The combination of ocean beach and estuary habitat makes Horseneck Beach State Reservation one of the premier birding locations in New England. Behind the dunes near Gooseberry Neck (a rocky headland at the eastern end of the Reservation), is a 100 site campground.
Camping out
For those looking to use the campground at the Horseneck Beach State Reservation advanced reservations are necessary. Reservations may be made as early as six months prior to the date of arrival, and as late as one day prior to arrival. Customers may make camping reservations for several dates at one time. Customers must be 18 years or older to make a reservation. ID is required upon registration at the campground.
New Improvements
In 2008 several new improvements were made to the Horseneck Beach State Reservation. The Day Use Area saw the addition of two new bathouses, replacement of the central plaza area, parking lot improvements and an increase in the number of toilets at both ends of the beach. You will find with your Boston handicap van rentals that the new bathhouses with composting toilets help protect the natural resources by reducing water consumption by at least 50 percent! The first phase also included new boardwalks which eliminate numerous pathways through the sensitive dune ecosystem.
Around the area
When visiting Horseneck Beach State Reservation with your Boston handicap van rentals don't miss out on the beautiful town of Westport. Westport, so named because it was the westernmost port in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, was first settled in 1670, as a part of the town of Dartmouth by members of the Sisson family. There were several cotton mills along the river, the largest of which was at the junction of the river with Lake Noquochoke on the Dartmouth town line. When you visit with your Boston handicap van rentals you will find that most of the town is residential with a large farming community, but you will find that Horseneck Beach State Reservation draws visitors for all around the area and is a popular summer destination.
