Haymarket
Haymarket Square is an area of Boston that you can visit with your rental car in Boston. This area is particularly noted for its old-style open-air market.
Local history
Haymarket Square is an open-air fruit and vegetable market that is at the North End of the City near Government Center and Faneuil Hall Marketplace. Open since about 1830, it has undergone many transformations over time. Unlike the more upscale Faneuil Hall Marketplace, Haymarket offers produce at cheap prices. Sometimes, you can even cut the price in half from the local supermarkets here. The market is open during daylight hours on Fridays and Saturdays for you to visit with your car rental in Boston.
Exploring the North End
The North End of the city is a great place to visit with your Boston rental car. This is the oldest residential community in the city, with people living here since the 1630s. There are a number of places to eat here, and a variety of tourist attractions. This was also home to he first community of black people that was created by free and escaped slaves. Over time, it was once the center of Jewish life in the city, which you can see in some of the Hebrew inscriptions on some of the buildings, as well as currently being the center of the Italian community. The bulk of the architecture that you will find here with your Boston rental car dates from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Tenement architecture is especially prominent in the area. However, you will also find a mixture of architecture from all periods of American history in the area, including some of the notable sites like Old North Church (1723), the Paul Revere House (1680), the Pierce-Hichborn House (1711), and the Clough House (1712). You can also find Copps Hill Burying Ground in the area, one of the oldest cemeteries in the country.
Getting to know Government Center
When you visit with your rental car in Boston, you will also find the Government Center area of the city near Haymarket. Located in downtown Boston, it was formerly the site of Scollay Square, and now the site of Boston City Hall, two courthouses, state office buildings, and City Hall Plaza, a large open square that is used to large outdoor events (including free summer concerts in the summer and a large Santa workshop display in the winter). The main attraction of the area is Boston City Hall, which is a very imposing building.
More shopping
While you are here with your car rental in Boston, you may also want to stop at the more upscale Faneuil Hall. This has been a meeting place for the city since 1742. Samuel Adams, James Otis, and others once spoke here to encourage the people of Boston to join in the fight for independence from Great Britain. On top of Faneuil Hall, there is a well-known grasshopper weather vane that is a symbol of Boston. Knowledge of the weather vane was used during the revolutionary war as a test of determining spies during the Revolution. The original hall burnt down in 1761, and was rebuilt in 1762. In 1806 there was an expansion of the hall, making it wider and adding a third floor. The building was entirely rebuilt of noncombustible materials in 189801899 and restored in 1992. Today, Faneuil Hall is part of a larger festival marketplace, made up of North Market, Quincy Market, and South Market. There is an eatery here as well that you can get some food at.
When you visit with your car rental in Boston, you will find Haymarket is a great place to visit, especially if you plan on cooking some of your own meals some of the prices here are half of what you will find in the grocery store!
