About Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust
The Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust, or DNRT, is a non-profit land trust that was founded in 1971. They are responsible for preserving important wildlife habitats, farmland, historic sites, wetlands, and open spaces in Dartmouth, and to educate and engage the community for long-term support of natural resource conservation. When you visit with your rental van Plymouth, there are many different areas you can visit aside from the Destruction Brook Wood Reserve. They do have an extensive trail system through a number of their reserves, so be prepared to go for a bit of a hike while you visit.
Garden Club
If you happen to be near New Bedford with your Plymouth van rental, you will find the New Bedford Garden Club Reserve is also part of the Dartmouth Natural Resource Trust. This is a glacial kettle hole between Gaffney Road and Wadsworth Lane with a walking path around the pond. This is a lesser-known part of the city. The reserve is currently undergoing some work to make it more accessible, and until the work is done, you may find the footing is uneven and there is poison ivy here as well.
Smith Farm
While you are here with your Plymouth rental van, you will find Smith Farm is a protected habitat that contains almost all of the habitats found in the area. There is agricultural farmland, meadows, upland forest, freshwater wetland, wetland forest, ponds, streams, and salt marsh. There is a nice trail here that will take you over the wooded wetlands and an observation platform that will allow you to overlook the Nonquitt Salt Marsh as well. This was an active farm until the 1950s. You can get here through the DNRT sign at the entrance on Smith Neck Road north of Round Hill. You can park along the road near the sign.
When you visit with your Plymouth car rental, you will find the Dartmouth Natural Resource Trust is a large park system in the area with many different places for you to explore. The Destruction Brook Woods Reserve is one of the parks that you can visit while you are here. Be sure to bring your walking shoes to explore the marked trails here as well, and see the beautiful landscape.
