The Computer Museum has been operating in Boston since 1979, and you can visit it today with your New England car rental. Today, much of the museum is found in California, but some of the exhibits still remain at the Boston Museum of Science.
Museum history
The Computer Museum got its start in 1975 with a display of circuit and memory hardware in the lobby of the Digital Equipment Corporation’s main building in Maynard, Massachusetts. In September 1979, the Digital Computer Museum was founded in Marlboro, Massachusetts, and received non-profit status in 1982. At this time, it changed its name to the Computer Museum and relocated to Museum wharf in Boston, sharing space with the Boston Children’s Museum. The Museum was focused on activities for children, including a two-story walk through of a computer, a virtual fish tank and robot theater. When the museum was in Boston, it had the largest collection of robots. In 1999, the Boston Computer Museum was closed, with many of the exhibits moving to Mountain View, California and the other parts of the collection moving to the Museum of Science.
