Boston Rental Cars and Cambridge Overview
Boston and Cambridge have always been closely associated with each other. In fact, many people believe that Cambridge is actually a suburb of the major Massachusetts metropolis. In all actuality, Cambridge is very much its own entity, front different political and municipal views then its nearby neighbour. But differences aside, both Boston and Cambridge remain two of the best tourist destinations in all of Massachusetts. But don't take Verc's word for it. Travelers in Boston rental cars are encouraged to take a drive across the river and experience all Cambridge has to over for themselves.
Hang out in Harvard Square
One of the best places to begin your Cambridge adventure is Harvard Square. Named for the Ivy League University that it fronts, Harvard Square is home to an eclectic mix of shabby chic student shops and beautiful landscaped lawns. Travelers in Boston rental cars are encouraged to drop by the Harvard Square Information Booth on arrival, located in the middle of the square. Trained volunteers dispense maps and brochures Monday through Saturday from 9am to 5pm, as well as on Sundays from 1 to 5pm. Travelers in Boston rental cars can also take a guided tour of Harvard Square from mid-June to Labor Day. Drop by the Info booth for more information on rates and to pick up your copy of the Cambridge Historical Commission's Revolutionary Cambridge walking guide. Harvard Square is home to dozens of restaurants, as well as the famous Harvard Coop bookstore. Follow Brattle Street to the outskirts of the square and you'll discover Tory Row, a residential area known for its architecture and historical ties.
Be a student for the day
Ever wonder what it would be like to be a student at Harvard University? Well, why not pretend during your upcoming Boston rental cars vacation? Travelers can embark on student-led tours of the campus, beginning at the Information Center. During the school year, these tours operate twice every weekday and once on Saturdays. If you'd like to explore on your own, remember to make a stop in Harvard Yard and at the foot of the John Harvard statue. Massachusetts Hall is another landmark location, as is the imposing Widener Library.
MIT, the other educational powerhouse
Travelers in Boston rental cars are also encouraged to visit the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MMIT) campus, located just a mile or two from Harvard's front gates. This school's information office is located at 77 Mass. Avenue. Free guided tours are offered weekdays at 10am and 2pm. The campus is known for its art and architecture, so don't forget to check out the excellent outdoor sculptural works by Picasso and Alexander Calder. The MIT Museum is also worth visiting, thanks to engaging holography displays and robotic exhibits. Admission to the museum is $5 for adults and $2 for seniors.
Cemetery of celebrities
Three extremely important colonial burial grounds can be found in Boston, providing travelers in Boston rental cars with plenty of unique places to visit. However, if you want to see the most famous cemetery in New England you'll have to head across the river to Cambridge and the Mount Auburn Cemetery. Located at 580 Mount Auburn Street, this cemetery is the final resting place of many well-known people. Visitors to this National Historic Landmark will find the graves of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Oliver Wendell Holmes and Julia Ward Howe. Travelers in Boston rental cars will also find a wide array of flowers in the cemetery, thanks to stunning designs by the Massachusetts Horticultural Society. Remember to drop by the visitor center inside the Story chapel for a brochure and map of the grounds.
