The Garden is built on twenty-four acres of land, and designed by George V. Meacham. The original design had plans for paths, flower beds, lake, fountains and statues. The design of this garden won for George Meacham, the best design award for a public Garden design competition too.
The garden is managed jointly by - the non-profit organization, Friends of the Public Garden, the Mayor's Office and The Parks Department of the City of Boston. In 1987 the park was declared a National Historic Landmark.
