Tips for Driving Your New England Car Rental at Night

If you have to drive at night in your New England car rental, you may want to know a few things to make your trip risk-free. Driving at night is quite a bit more dangerous than driving during the day. This is mainly due to one simple issue: visibility is low quality, and sense of depth is impaired. At Verc, we want to make sure our customers are as comfortable and as safe as possible, so we’ve provided a few simple tips to help decrease these two impairments when you drive your New England car rental.

1) Check all exterior lights. While you won’t have to worry about getting a New England car rental from Verc with any damage, mishaps can occur while you have the car. Be sure that the lights are in proper working condition and aligned correctly for your nighttime drive.

2) Use high beams appropriately. Don’t use your high beams in the fog, as it will blind other drivers and further impair your visibility. If another driver has their high beams on, refrain from flashing yours to get them to turn their lights down as this will blind everyone.

3) Adjust mirrors accordingly. Most rearview mirrors have a day/night adjustment to decrease reflection from other cars’ headlights. When driving your New England car rental at night, it would be best to flip this on. Make sure your exterior mirrors are adjusted properly, as well. Decrease your blind spots as much as possible, as these become more dangerous at night.

4) Avoid use of interior lights. Interior lights increase glare on your rearview mirror. If you must read a map, or look at directions, it would be best to safely pull over to the side of the road.

5) Keep your eyes moving. The best way to prevent fatigue and remain aware of your surroundings is to avoid having your eyes focused on one thing for too long. Check for flashing lights, other cars and other signs of movement, or obstacles on the road that may not be visible from far distances.

6) Drive at a steady speed. Speeding is much more dangerous at night as your ability to perceive objects from afar is more difficult at night. Your reaction time also may be slower from minor fatigue, so you’ll want to be able to stop quicker in case of unexpected obstacles.

7) Increase your distance. By keeping a greater distance from the car in front of you, you have more leeway for reaction time, which makes up for decreased visibility and depth perception.

8) Rest often. Fatigue is a major cause of car accidents at night. This is because nighttime driving takes more focus and concentration than daytime driving, causing a more intense strain on your eyes. To stay safe while in your New England car rental. Pull into a rest stop or off on an exit to take a quick break if you feel yourself growing tired, or if your reactions begin slowing. This could do as much as save your life.

These simple measures should help increase your safety and comfort while driving your New England car rental at night. This is particularly true if you are driving in an entirely unfamiliar region.

Two other helpful measures to take are getting your eyes checked regularly and your prescription updated. Also, anti-reflective eye glass coating is a great option if you do wear glasses while driving. It can be applied by your eye glass specialist for fairly cheap.
