A History of Pirates in New England

When you visit with your New England car rentals, you’ll learn that piracy in America boomed in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and many of those pirates were New Englanders. Most pirates started out as privateers, who were hired by local merchants to attack the shipping of England’s enemies. Since England was periodically at war with a variety of European countries, the ships of these countries became fair game for New England privateers. After the end of the War of Spanish Succession ended in 1713, Europe was generally at peace. Many of the unemployed privateers turned to piracy, which ultimately produced the greatest age of piracy.

Despite being punishable by hanging, many seamen willingly risked their lives in order to experience the life of easy profits, freer existence and boisterous lifestyle. Walk the plank into a world of high seas, caves, treasure, and swashbuckling sword fights and explore the New England Pirate Museum on your visit to Massachusetts!
