Anthony's Town House
Anthony's Town House is a turn-of-the-century brownstone that was built in 1890. It is located on Beacon Street, in one of Boston's upscale neighborhoods. Historic Beacon Street
Beacon Street is a major thoroughfare in Boston that begins at the intersection of Tremont Street and School Street with your New England rental car where it rises up Beacon Hill (which is where you will find the historic district). From there, it descends to Charles Street and through the Back Bay neighbourhood to Kenmore Square. From here, it skirts around Fenway Park and passes into the city of Newton. The Beacon Hill neighborhood is known for its Federal-style rowhouses, gas-lit streets, and brick sidewalks. It is one of the most desirable and expensive neighborhoods in the city. The Massachusetts State House is in a prominent location at the top of the hill.
Area history
When you are in the area with your rental car in New England, you will find that the area was named for a beacon that was once located at the highest point in central Boston, which is just behind the current site of the Massachusetts State House. There are two other hills in the area, Pemberton Hill and Mount Vernon, which were reduced in height to allow for housing development, and the earth was used to fill in Mill Pond. The south slope of the hill was a desirable place to be in the 19th century. The north side of the hill was a poor black neighbourhood at the time. But it was also the site of where many famous black leaders, including Frederick Douglas, Harriet Tubman, and others spoke at the African Meeting House on Joy Street. Beacon Hill was one of the centers of the anti-slavery movement during the Antebellum era. In the 1950s, there was an urban renewal project in the 1950s and the area was designated a National Historic Landmark in late 1962.
